The work of Nadia Barkate (Bilbao, 1980) combines various graphic and sculptural languages with autobiographical fragments or, more or less the same thing, her own images. With a degree and PhD from the Faculty of Fine Arts of the Basque Country, she teaches in the Painting Department. Her practice is marked by a certain narrative impulse that links everyday experiences, manual work, and words.
She began working in illustration and vinyl record design for local bands, as well as concert posters and animated music videos in the local music scene. Taking drawing as the main focus of her work, she has developed various disciplines such as animation, screen printing, video, and documentary. Her artistic training under Angel Bados and Miroslaw Balka stands out. She also considers the formalist tradition in Basque art, as well as underground culture and the aesthetics of subcultures, to be a major influence on her education as an artist.
