Frames / Fragmentos

Glòria Martí

Frames / Fragmentos could be defined as a sort of personal diary of the author. As the title points out, this video is composed of fragments, of visual registers that, when juxtaposed, build a subjective narrative. This is an ‘audiovisual collage’, following the definition by Eugeni Bonet of pieces which, working from different sources (literary, aesthetic, philosophical or visual) and combining various discourses, manage to blur the edges between elemental genres (documentary, narrative, etc.). In this case, the collage enacts a thought process spoken out loud, a reflection on the different aspects of globalised society: precarity at work, cultural colonisation, the construction of reality by the mass media, the questioning of gender representations and of categorical thinking about identity and sexuality, etc.

A living-dining room in a house of a neighbourhood in the outskirts of Malabo, the capital of Ecuatorial Guinea (a Spanish ex-colony that attained independence in 1968). The television, which no one is paying attention to, is tuned to the international channel of Televisión Española (Spanish public television). The constant breaks in the reception of the signal intermingle with the images and sounds of the programme, a ballet based on El Quijote.

A chinese restaurant in Malabo. Different cultural elements and recognisable symbols of a global market mix together. On television a debate in the Spanish senate house about the Spanish intervention in the Iraq war is being shown.

Images recorded in a Los Angeles supermarket. The sound of the radio broadcasts news about the results of the US presidential elections of November 2000. Joan Crawfard playing Vienna in the film Johnny Guitar whilst the song Sometimes is hard to be a woman sounds.

In Frames / Fragmentos, as in most works by Martí, music is extremely important.
