Confronting the artistic discourse (of an installation of garbage bags collected on the street and deposited in Salamanca's contemporary art space El Gallo) with a politician (who is always defensive), both crossing with scenes of children in super8 and signs of hope for the Spanish democratic process, more a slogan repeated in whispers, five levels of reality are amalgamated. A dense collage of human beings in the constant transition of remembrance.
The meaning of La Romanina, diminutive for a woman from Rome, was the nickname of the prima donna Marianna Bulgarelli, one of the eighteenth century's first opera singers, and the title of a popular Italian song that apparently has nothing to do with this video.
Vintage images of the Spanish transition (from dictatorship to democracy) are combined with domestic super8 images from the same period. Two audio recordings confront two people in the picture. Conversations on artistic practice against political speeches in the beginning of the Spanish democracy form the soundtrack which is applied to film fragments from the time. The images are of politicians and expectant people in the street, as well as shots of the first steps of different children. The agitated memory is synthesized by the author's whisper that is emphasized like a mantra. Hypnotically the words “is even more valid” obsessively repeat from an ever more distant dream.
Mediator between different points of view, the author treats sound and visual documents as instruments that represent the moment of their bondage, the outlines are drawn for various methods of popular emancipation. The mixture of media and sources is not free. Through the diy-nature of the piece, fragments are de-contextualized with their own story to later be regrouped via a particular logic. Mechina is able to put together a device in which a past, relatively recent, continues to give lessons of hope for what lies ahead.
