This is a short surrealist narrative piece with a macabre feel to it, during which a peculiar mis-en-scéne gradually unfolds. Two lovers eat that which they love about each other. This mutual feast will take them on an astral journey around Gea, the spirit of the Earth, and the ritual of its fertilisation.

Mercedes Gaspar develops this fantastic tale titled Las partes de mí que te aman son seres vacíos out of a mythical short story. Her experimentations with animation, and specifically, her use of the peculiar technique of shot by shot filming, with photographs, objects and people, give her pieces a particular oneiric character. In this one, two lovers offer each other pieces of their own bodies to either eat or integrate. This mutual feast reaches ecstasy when the spirit of the Earth materialises above them and swallows their astral bodies.

The roots of the cannibalistic ritual presented in this piece stem from an old faith in which loved ones who had died of natural causes were eaten in order to help them reach a place among the gods and to provide the family with good luck. The sentence uttered during the Last Supper is a good example of this: “Take this and eat, this is my body; take this and drink, this is my blood”: the ultimate proof of love. Las partes de mí que te aman son seres vacíos is a lovers’ feast that, as materialisation of an essential beauty, is a common theme in romantic literature: opposite beings that complement each other by devouring each other; a form of absolute love that, bite by bite, dismembers its lover; a cannibalistic, almost ghoulish, love, that unleashes a carnal passion for sacrifice and an impulsive desire for wholeness - that is, to mutually complete each other and reach spiritual fullness.

By treating the story as a poetic fantasy it loses some of the rawness that is implicit in this tale of sublime lust, which infringes all moral norms by lasciviously revelling in the flesh, in order to reach the ideal of death as total love. Rituals are never wasted, behind them is always a myth encapsulating some form of knowledge. In Las partes de mí que te aman son seres vacíos the devoured devourers become the continuation of a sublimated beauty, as they get lost in the spiritual abstraction from which life will again spring.
