Los Invisibles

Glòria Martí

Los invisibles confronts us with the harsh social reality of those excluded by the dominant economic system. Using carefully and respectfully shot sequences of scenes in the streets of Los Angeles and Tijuana, this research piece dwells upon the impact of the dominant power structures in our daily lives.

The title of the piece clearly alludes to the characters in the images: mostly emigrants, latinos in the USA, people who, because they don’t belong to either of the categories of ‘producer’ or ‘consumer’, the only groups that a system based on benefit index and shares, considers, are ignored by the system. Nevertheless, in any case, these are people who are also part of the construction of the city, by the simple fact of inhabiting it.

On a formal level the video comprises a chain of flashes linked together with fades to black: a discretely and respectfully filmed street scene, a fade to black, another scene shot on the street, another fade to black..., as if the author was offering us, between each of the images, a space to think about what has just been seen.

A voice-over speaks about the genocide perpetrated by the grand capital, about the social exclusion, about minorities, emigrants, indigenous people. The voice sounds familiar and soon we realise that it is the voice of Subcomandante Marcos. Fragments of Gómez Quiñónez’s text ‘Mexican Labor’ are shown over the images at different points of the video. These are words that situate us within the socio-political context of the reality presented in the piece, that is, the Mexican-American border today:

'.. the appropriation of labour force and resources from underdeveloped areas is significant in the increase in the accumulation of capital...', '... the decision of individuals to emigrate takes place within an economic structure created by individuals with much more power...', etc.

In short, this piece attempts to bring to the fore the social impact of the political and economic interests.
