In this work, Valeriano López revises aspects of history perpetuated through celebrations that are commonly incorporated into customs and folklore.
The video shows The Takeover of Granada, a celebration that is carried out every year on the balcony of the city’s town hall, from which a councillor addresses the city with the slogan “Granada for the illustrious Catholic King and Queen!” while a banner is exhibited and the national anthem is played. The staging seems to be totally anachronistic due to its triumphant tone and the imposition of a quintessential idea of what it means to be Spanish, associated with a fanatical Catholicism.
In the work, made up of different shots of the celebration, there is a follow shot of the archbishop’s sermon, which mainly deals with Spain’s unity. The ceremony is presented as an exaltation of Spanish nationalism, but has its ironic compensation in the work, through the use of Catalan subtitles.
