Pilar Álvarez (Santander, 1982) is an educator, artist, and filmmaker. She holds a degree in Fine Arts from the University of Salamanca (2005), a diploma in documentary filmmaking from the Madrid Film Institute, NIC (2010), and a degree in Documentary Direction from the International School of Cinema and TV (EICTV) in San Antonio de los Baños, Cuba (2013). She teaches cinematography at various film schools and is part of the education team at the Dos de Mayo Art Center, CA2M. She works in the field of cultural management, specifically in education and mediation. She shoots and edits videos, sometimes using her own footage and other times with found images that end up being somewhat hers. Her short films have been screened at national and international film festivals, as well as in art centers and cultural institutions (Círculo de Bellas Artes in Madrid and the Cervantes Institute, among others).

Pilar Álvarez films to see what is so close that it often goes unnoticed. Spaces where things happen and sometimes you learn something, whether in a museum, at school, or at her own home. These videos are shown in cinemas, also in museums, although Pilar most enjoys presenting them in the classes and workshops she teaches, whether to future filmmakers, artists, teachers, children, or adolescents, allowing her to deconstruct them and complete a process that begins intuitively long before. Pilar Álvarez's work, which began in painting, soon shifted to the field of video creation with a series of works upon which she has built an increasingly coherent discourse between direct recording and the estranging suggestion of everyday acts. Her interest in the documentary genre places her in a field of exploration particularly fertile between capturing images of reality and their reworking into micrological discourses, attentive to detail and capable of projecting the reception of the recorded actions towards an aesthetic and political interpretation.

She has been awarded in various competitions, such as the First Prize for Young Artists of Castile and León from Caja de Burgos (2005 and 2007 editions) or the Caja España Sculpture Award (2009). She has also been recognized by the Castile and León Board in its Young Art program in the categories of Photography (2006), Other Manifestations (2007), and Exhibitions (2009) for her exhibition Number of Visitors. Her work has been exhibited in art centers like DA2, with the exhibition titled Sensitive Screens (2006), and CAB in Burgos (2008). These recognitions for a young artist are complemented by her selection for the 2008 edition of Photoespaña (Caja de Burgos I+E Collection. Circo Price Hall, Madrid, 2008). She was selected to be part of the cycle D-generation: New Underground Experiences in Spanish Non-Fiction, curated by Josetxo Cerdán and Antonio Weinrichter for the Las Palmas Film Festival (2009). She is also part of the Injuve 09 selection for Plastic Arts with her work First Song at the Círculo de Bellas Artes.
