Freedom of expression is essential to democratic life. Without information, there is no public opinion. Without opinion, there is no freedom, states the Inter-American Court of Human Rights.
Colombia, November 1985 — the country experiences two of its most remembered tragedies. Football had never been so used. On November 6th, while the Army seizes the Palace of Justice, Juan Gossaín's live broadcast is interrupted by direct order from the then Minister of Telecommunications, Noemí Sanín. That day, the official figures were: 98 dead, 11 missing… Millos 2 - Unión 0.
A week later, on November 13th, the Nevado del Ruiz volcano erupts. 22,000 people die buried.
That night, there was also a match: Millos vs. Cali, live broadcast.
This video attempts a critical rereading of the archive, the numbers, and the broadcasts. What images are we shown, and which ones are hidden? What kind of country watches football while it burns?
