A rainy night triggers memory, while the inhabitants of those memories —ghosts?— attempt to communicate. Somewhere between audiovisual diary and found footage, Las miradas presents a free and poetic exercise in memory and nostalgia. A way of bringing Baudelaire’s spleen into video form.

The sound design uses archival material (sonic found footage) of encrypted messages and Morse code pulses — a sign of intimate, secret communication — in various languages and tones. The visual archive comes from home movies filmed by the Monterde family in the 1930s, 16mm footage that includes both direct recordings of events in a Valencian village and small fictions created for family amusement. From this, an imagery is extracted that, when juxtaposed with contemporary SD footage (a contrast heightened through the use of color versus sepia), redefines the meaning of the image and its reason for being.
