Javier Olivera (1969, Buenos Aires, Argentina) is a visual artist, film director and screenwriter, and educator. Through the intersection of disciplines –painting, photography, video, installation, artist’s books, cinema– he explores the relationship between memory and identity as a foundation of both individual and social being. He applies his craft and technological knowledge, gained in the industrial field of film and television, to an independent production methodology in order to preserve an auteur voice and ensure formal exploration.

He studied painting in Argentina with Luis Felipe Noé and Eduardo Stupía, among others; film in the USA at UCLA; and Ibero-American literature at the José Ortega y Gasset Foundation in Spain. In cinema, he has written and directed the fiction feature El visitante (1999) and the documentaries Mika, mi guerra de España (2013), La sombra (2015), La extraña. Notas sobre el (auto) exilio (2018), Una habitación en Bangkok (2025), and La piel (2026). He has directed fiction and documentary series for platforms in Argentina, Venezuela, the USA, and Spain; and has led seminars and workshops at film and audiovisual arts universities in Argentina, Uruguay, Colombia, Cuba, and Spain.

Since 1990, he has also produced a body of visual art including paintings, photographs, single-channel videos, and video installations, exhibited in solo and group shows across Ibero-America, the USA, and Europe. He lives and works in La Pesquera, Castilla-La Mancha, Spain.
