This piece is an interesting exercise in documentary filmmaking, which Marino undertook in 1994 when he was commissioned to film a documentary about a children’s correctional on its 60th anniversary. During the research, he found film material shot in the same premises in 1920. The final video that Marino produced offers a dual combination of the view of the place in 1920 and the artist’s own contemporary look at it.

This double view is presented in black and white. In his pieces, Marino is always searching to establish a personal relation with the characters. As in other of his works  Un día Bravo or  In the Death’s Dream Kingdom here we can likewise enter the mental world of those who appear on screen. The children confined in the correctional are presented as individuals, with feelings, fears and desires. We are not watching a formless mass, but people who still hold some hope.

The video begins with images on the brink of abstraction. The aesthetic is close to the tradition of experimental cinema, in the line of other videomakers such as Mark Lewis. The end of the video features the same image of a degraded romantic pond with which it starts: in front of the small pond stands the correctional.

The youngsters in Marino’s film watch television, have time to think and to desire, and attend class in small groups. Their day-to-day is presented in its slow pace. At no point do we witness any signs of guilt. Halfway through the video, a light effect reveals the group of children playing on top of a mountain: incredibly beautiful images that speak about the passing of time and the innocence of children. The video ingeniously turns completely around with images of 1920, in which we are no longer able to distinguish any of the individualities. Instead, we are confronted with a poverty ridden collective, that must be trained for the world of labour, and has no possibility of psychological improvement. Without one single word (the soundtrack is made up of natural and mechanical sounds), the images transport us to the daily life - and the passage of time - in this correctional.
