The Poem. A video essay from Human Resources Project

Núria Güell Serra

This video essay gathers the testimony of seven ex-convicts who have served sentences in different penitentiary centres in Spain. It analyses the role of the "delinquent" in relation to the penitentiary system in the mechanisms of government of the nation-state.

The Poem (research project "Human Resources" - Germany, 2022) addresses current biopolitical and exploitative issues ariesed from prison logics. As part of its reintegration programme, labour-capable inmates are offered to state and private companies as a workforce. "Human Resources" proposes to employ this workforce for the benefit of the art institution by having part of the staff that ensures the running of the theatre festival "Bodies Un-protected" made up of inmates sentenced to prison terms. The jobs they performed were as follows: kitchen assistant, entrance control, waiter, cloakroom, security and assistance to the participating artists. Finally, as this was a cultural project, the institution did not allow us to financially remunerate the work of the inmates. According to the penitentiary institution, receiving culture is already enough remuneration.
