Would it be possible to take down, for one day, the posters covering the walls of the university?
The Marcelo T. de Alvear campus of the Faculty of Social Sciences at the University of Buenos Aires occupies the former building of the Institute of Maternity and Social Assistance. It is a public university with an active student movement organized through assemblies and a strong tradition of political activism. The posters, handmade by different student groups, communicate ideas and activities with advocacy and/or electoral aims. They are placed in strictly delimited areas according to each group’s political strength. During the academic year, the walls are always covered with posters, becoming one of the site’s defining features.
At this campus, degrees in Sociology and Labor Relations are taught. Due to the condition of the building, its relocation to a new campus—built some years ago to host all Social Sciences programs—is planned.
The proposal to remove the posters from the walls for one day triggers a debate among students about the management and meaning of this public space. After a process of open dialogue, and shortly before the Student Union elections, a group decides to carry out the action. Stick my nose into other people’s business. A day without signs [Meterme donde no me llaman. Un dia sin carteles] record shows how, over the course of four months, the heterogeneous student community gradually shapes the proposal.
