In a dystopian, parallel winter of 2020, a teenage hustler becomes the prey of three powers that be: Big Data and the IT monopolies, boomers who own real estate, and aliens. The film proposes an updated and dystopian revision of the coming-of-age genre, which is usually condescending and impudent towards its own protagonists. Usually, it traps the youth in a transparent narrative arc that prevents the advent of new subjectivities, because it tells the story of a painful and unjustified adaptation to obsolete social norms.
Here, a contrary cinematic gesture celebrates the boldness and unintelligibility of a youth, both empowered and exploited by Big Data and the monopolies that excavate the generation gap. At the foot of Montserrat, a unique geological formation and monthly meeting point for UFO sightings, a teenager fuses with technology and is pushed by it to escape, misleading a viewer who is "left behind". His wanderings, erratic at first, are driven by his intense desires and are mimicked by an alien extraterrestrial's banal sensibility. The only lesson the delirious outside world will teach this young man is the violent and unjust theft of the immovable object of his desires.
Emerald Fantasy Undisclosed explores the transversal conception of fantasy proposed by eclectic audiovisual artefacts. The powerful representation of mimetic desire (the "phantasme") proposed by the cinematographic advertising of luxury products in the nineties and current fashion-film is incorporated into a science-fiction fantasy plot, filmed with the naturalism of auteur cinema (with pretensions to "a-fantasy"). A product placement of the ARTOWEAR rings actually made in the neighbourhood of Montserrat feeds the tension between reality, fiction and fantasy, reflecting the commodification of the audiovisual artefact.
