In this enigmatic piece by the Galician artist Antón Cabaleiro we are presented with a scene in which two people, who know each other, are incapable, despite inhabiting the same space, of communicating with each other.
The two main characters in this video are in what looks like a waiting room, or any other “non-place”. They behave normally, and their gestures betray the everyday nature of the scene. But something is going on, the words that come out of their mouths turn into white noise, blending in into a digital nightmare that makes of the message spoken pure gibberish that will never be deciphered.
The two characters are out of focus, they loose their facial features and become screens on which to project frustrations, of the absurdity of the everyday and of the impossibility of communication, both the quintessence of the difficulty of relationships between human beings. This video, which starts out as a formal exercise, with a well-crafted and digitally retouched image, thus ends up as a critique of a lot of the problems the individual suffers today.
This video is constructed as a cryptic piece, open to interpretations. It evidences the inherent frustration in communication, and touches on themes that come up in most of the work by this young artist.
