"a" works for nike.com in a call centre in Amsterdam. Unmotivated and alienated, she decides to quit her job and return to her hometown in the Basque Country. During her last weeks at the company, she video-documents the many spaces that make up the building, records her co-workers and often takes self-portraits of herself while eating alone. Her chat texts with "k" introduce us to a decaying sentimental relationship and simultaneously address ethical questions about the images "a" is producing and the obstacles she faces in creating a representation of the workplace.
The Telephone Smile explores questions about contemporary labour, alienation and its representation in the media. The film highlights the political relevance of documenting the workspace while exploring ways of responding to these images related to the world of work created by the powers that be.
