Silencio

Heidi Ramírez

This video is part of a serial project called "videoconcepts", which consists of making videos based on the meaning of words. Through this work author addresses issues such as racism, contamination, institutional silencing, etc.

This particular video talks about the meaning of the word "silence". We can go to more classical roots, such as "there is no noise", or, "nothing is heard", but.... in a society as noisy as today's, does silence really exist, or is there rather a "lack - intentional or not - of listening"? Not all bodies produce the same kind of noise for the system.

In communication, the receiver is important, since verbalising reality helps us to make our experiences more valid. If the receiver ignores us, the communication doesn't work and we as a person are annulled from what we have experienced.

In this video Heidi talks about silence, or rather, about what is silenced. The strawberry seasonal workers in Huelva are silenced. And not because they have no voice of their own, but because institutional deafness is a way of violating them.
