This piece attempts to separate the time and space of one image, aiming to signify and to value each of the fundamental materials of video separately. In this work, two different spaces are suggested by the use of visual “blinds”, the moving image is the same, but its times are different, only coming together at the end of the video.
The video indulges in a formal game with the montage and the layering of shots, creating formal metaphors that give voice to the suffocation and alienation which we end up with after going through the processes of adaptation to the rules of the game imposed by our technological society. The space that surrounds us becomes thus both suffocating and fragile.
It is important also to note that again Furió has chosen a woman as her main character. Under her gaze, woman’s representation stays clear of a carnality evident in other works... here it looses the edges and its definition, it becomes a reflection, a shadow, a fragment... light.
Furió is one of the most sincere artists from the generation of Spanish artists who, in the mid-1990s, and still with scarce resources, start working in the field of technological art to deal with issues of identity. Furió’s work is indebted to conceptual art and the performance movements of the 1960s and 1970s. Hers is an original body of work within the Spanish art scene. Unlike other artistic practices of the 1990s that, like Furió, returned to the body and the video performance, but who priviledged the spectacle and superficiality, Furió’s work proposes a linguistic and social meditation.
